Murals on ceiling of sanctuary

This mural depicts the Zodiac symbol Capricorn (in Hebrew: Gedi). There were many murals in the building both for decoration and religious purposes. As decoration, they are similar to those in European synagogues of the late 19th Century. Their religious purpose was to explain the symbols and how they might influence behavior. According to Iris Fishof, “the symbolic circular depiction encompassing the dome conveys a religious message about God’s creation and cosmic harmony.” In addition, the term “mazzal tov” is “the hope that [the person] will be blessed by the influence of the sign (mazzal) under which the [event] has taken place.”
