This is a small watercolor painted on ivory by notable portraitist E.G. Malbone. Malbone was born in Newport in 1777 and began his artistic career in Providence at 17 years old in 1794 (about when this portrait of John Brown was painted). Malbone was widely sought after by the elite in society, and, at his most prolific, he was completing three miniatures a week during a five month period. E.G. Malbone died at the age of twenty-nine, his career having lasted only twelve years due to the debilitating effects of tuberculosis.
